How Does the Harmonized System (HS) Work?
The Harmonized System (HS) is an international product classification standard maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO), used by over 200 countries and economic unions. The first 6 digits of any HS code are internationally standardized — this is the universal reference point that HSRates uses to unify duty rates from the US, EU, and UK.
Each country extends the 6-digit code with national subheadings: the US uses 10-digit HTS numbers, the EU uses 10-digit TARIC codes, and the UK applies its own 10-digit commodity codes. HSRates maps every national tariff line back to its parent HS6 code — so you see the complete duty picture across all three jurisdictions in one place.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an HS code and why does it matter for importing?
An HS code (Harmonized System) is an internationally standardized 6-digit number that classifies a product for customs purposes. Over 200 countries use the same system. Your HS code determines which duty rate applies to your goods — for example, laptops (HS 8471.30) enter the US duty-free, while the EU applies 0% or 2.5% depending on specifications.
How up-to-date are the duty rates on HSRates?
Data is updated regularly from official government databases: USITC for US HTSUS rates, the European Commission's TARIC for EU rates, and HMRC's UK Trade Tariff for UK rates. Changes are detected automatically, and only modified records are updated.
Can I check additional duties and free trade agreements on HSRates?
Yes. Each HS6 code page shows not only the MFN (Most Favoured Nation) standard rate, but also additional duties, anti-dumping duties, and where available, preferential rates from free trade agreements. For the EU, official EBTI binding tariff rulings are also included.
Is HSRates free to use?
Yes. All 5,571+ HS code comparison pages, the HS code search tool, and the duty calculator are free to access without registration. HSRates provides official customs tariff data from three jurisdictions as a publicly accessible resource.
